What is the history of Kitchener’s Island?
Kitchener’s Island goes way back to 1899 when Lord Kitchener, who was the British Consul-General back then, got the island as a thank you for winning battles in Sudan. He loved plants so much that he turned the whole place into a big green garden and brought seeds and shrubs all the way from India and Malaysia. From 1911 to 1914 he worked on making it what it is now. Then in 1928 the Ministry of Irrigation added even more trees from all over. After that it became government land and turned into a Botanical Research Institute, which is why today it’s one of Aswan’s nicest and oldest green spots.
