The ideal time to explore Egypt’s deserts and oases is between October and April, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. Summer months can be extremely hot, especially in remote desert areas.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, a sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a scarf or keffiyeh for sun and dust protection. Nights can be cold, so a warm layer or jacket is also essential. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle.

- Kharga Oasis is around 3.5 to 4 hours by car from Luxor.
- Dakhla Oasis is further west, about 6 to 7 hours from Luxor, and is often reached after spending a night in Kharga.
These routes allow travelers to explore Egypt’s lesser-known but historically rich Western Desert from either Cairo or Luxor, depending on your itinerary.
