FAQ's

Find answers to your questions about mystical deserts and oases.

The ideal time to explore Egypt’s deserts and oases is between October and April, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. Summer months can be extremely hot, especially in remote desert areas.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, a sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a scarf or keffiyeh for sun and dust protection. Nights can be cold, so a warm layer or jacket is also essential. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle.
The White Desert is known for its surreal chalk rock formations shaped by wind and sand over time, creating a moon-like landscape. The Black Desert, in contrast, features dark volcanic hills and black basalt-covered sand—offering a dramatic visual contrast to its white counterpart.

The White and Black Deserts are located near Bahariya Oasis, about 4 to 5 hours’ drive from Cairo. They are commonly visited 2-day package or more, with unforgettable camping under the stars in the White Desert.

From Luxor, you can explore the Kharga and Dakhla Oases, which lie on the ancient Forty Days Road (Darb El-Arba’een):

  • Kharga Oasis is around 3.5 to 4 hours by car from Luxor.
  • Dakhla Oasis is further west, about 6 to 7 hours from Luxor, and is often reached after spending a night in Kharga.

These routes allow travelers to explore Egypt’s lesser-known but historically rich Western Desert from either Cairo or Luxor, depending on your itinerary.

Bahariya is home to the Valley of the Golden Mummies, ancient tombs, natural hot springs, and serves as a gateway to the White and Black Deserts. It also features palm groves and salt lakes surrounded by dramatic desert terrain.
Siwa is famous for its Berber culture, salt lakes, Cleopatra’s Spring, and Shali Fortress. It’s a peaceful, isolated oasis with distinct traditions and architecture, located near Egypt’s western border with Libya.
In Kharga, don’t miss Hibis Temple and the Christian necropolis of Bagawat. Dakhla offers Deir El Hagar Temple, the Old Islamic town of Al-Qasr, and soothing hot springs. Farafra is known for its quiet charm, Badr Museum, and proximity to the White Desert.
Fayoum is a lush area near Cairo known for Lake Qarun, Wadi El-Rayan waterfalls, Wadi El-Hitan (Valley of the Whales), and mudbrick pyramids like Hawara and Lahun. It offers a mix of desert landscapes and birdwatching opportunities.
Yes, travel to Egypt’s oases and deserts is safe when done with licensed tour operators like Step To Egypt. You’ll be accompanied by experienced guides, including local Bedouins and Egyptologists, who ensure a secure and informative journey.
Camping in the desert is a highlight of many trips, especially in the White Desert. It is safe with professional guides who understand the terrain and conditions. Solo camping or venturing without a guide is not recommended.
